In mid-1961, with Berlin in crisis and a test moratorium collapsing, Nikita Khrushchev ordered a demonstration nobody could talk around: a hydrogen bomb of 100 megatons, to be built in a sprint and detonated before the 22nd Party Congress adjourned. The weapons laboratory at Arzamas-16, with Andrei Sakharov among its leading designers, delivered in about four months — with one crucial edit. A full-yield shot would have thrown fallout across half the north and given the drop aircraft essentially no chance; the team replaced the uranium fusion tamper with lead, halving the design to roughly 50 megatons — still more than all explosives used in the Second World War combined, Hiroshimas by the several thousand.

The eight-metre, 27-tonne device — too big for any bomb bay, slung beneath a specially cut-open Tu-95 painted in reflective white — was released over Novaya Zemlya at 10,500 metres under a giant parachute, buying the crew of pilot Andrei Durnovtsev 188 seconds of flight. Detonation came at about 4,000 metres altitude.
The numbers remain unmatched. The fireball spanned roughly eight kilometres, its bottom held off the ground by its own reflected shockwave; the flash was visible about 1,000 kilometres away; the mushroom cloud rose some 60-65 kilometres, through the entire stratosphere. Windows broke hundreds of kilometres off; the atmospheric pressure wave circled the Earth three times on the instruments; villages of the test archipelago were flattened to the last timber; and the release crew’s aircraft, 39 km away and falling a kilometre when the wave caught it, landed scorched. Because the fireball never touched ground and the lead tamper suppressed the fission fraction, the shot was — by the standards of the genre — remarkably “clean”: some 97 per cent of its yield from fusion, one of the lowest fallout-per-megaton ratios ever achieved, in service of the dirtiest possible signal.
The signal and the turn
Militarily the Tsar Bomba was theatre — too heavy to deliver against a defended target, never weaponised in series; strategically it worked exactly once, as punctuation to Khrushchev’s rhetoric. Its deeper consequences ran through its designer: Sakharov, already sickened by atmospheric testing’s calculated casualties, took from the 1961-62 test series the momentum that carried him to champion the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty — driving tests underground — and onward into the dissidence that won him the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize and internal exile: the bomb’s principal author becoming the state’s principal conscience.
The record stands unchallenged; yield competition died with the realisation that accuracy beats size. When the Hunga Tonga volcano erupted in 2022, the comparison every agency reached for was Tsar Bomba — nature requiring a volcano to match, roughly, what nine men in four months once assembled to make a point.
