The Watergate Scandal That Forced the Resignation of President Richard Nixon on 9 August 1974
Five burglars were arrested inside the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office Building in Washington DC at 02:30 on 17 June 1972. The two-year investigation that followed linked the burglary to the Nixon re-election campaign. President Richard Nixon resigned at noon on 9 August 1974 — the only US president to resign the office.
