The Dutch Exotic Dancer Convicted of German Espionage by a French Court Martial and Shot at Vincennes on 15 October 1917
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle — performing as Mata Hari — was a 41-year-old Dutch exotic dancer convicted of espionage for Germany by a French court martial in July 1917 and executed by firing squad at Vincennes on 15 October 1917. The post-war access to the French and German intelligence archives substantially weakens the original espionage case against her.
