The French Panama Disaster of 1881-1889, Which Killed 22,000 Workers and Brought Down Governments
Fresh from Suez, Ferdinand de Lesseps promised a sea-level canal through Panama. Yellow fever and malaria killed on the order of 22,000 workers; the company collapsed in 1889 with the savings of 800,000 French investors; and the bribery scandal that followed shook the Third Republic. The United States finished the canal only after conquering the mosquito.
