The Hollywood Actress and the Avant-Garde Composer Who Patented Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum in 1942
Hedy Lamarr, MGM star, and George Antheil, modernist composer, jointly received US Patent 2,292,387 on 11 August 1942 for a frequency-hopping torpedo guidance system. The US Navy filed it away. The patent expired unused in 1959. Modern Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi rest on the same principle.
