Stanley Finds Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871 — and the Famous Greeting May Be Invented
In November 1871 the journalist Henry Morton Stanley, bankrolled by a New York newspaper, found the lost missionary-explorer David Livingstone at Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika. 'Dr Livingstone, I presume?' became the century's most famous greeting — though Stanley tore the page from his diary and may have coined it afterwards. The two men's afterlives diverged as sharply as their legends.
