The German Passenger Airship That Caught Fire on Final Approach to a New Jersey Mooring Mast on 6 May 1937 and Burned in 37 Seconds
The German hydrogen airship LZ-129 Hindenburg caught fire on its final mooring approach at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey, at 7:25 p.m. on 6 May 1937. The 245-metre airship burned to the ground in approximately 37 seconds. 36 of 97 people aboard died. The disaster ended commercial passenger airship aviation. Radio broadcaster Herbert Morrison's live recording — "oh, the humanity" — became the first major audio news broadcast in history.
