The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in Prince William Sound at 00:04 Alaska Time on 24 March 1989
The Exxon Valdez supertanker ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, at 00:04 local time on 24 March 1989. Approximately 41,600 cubic metres (260,000 barrels) of Alaska North Slope crude oil spilled into the sound. The spill killed an estimated 250,000 seabirds and remained the largest US coastal oil spill until the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.
