The Tomb of Saladin in Damascus Was a Wooden Box Until Kaiser Wilhelm Visited in 1898
Saladin died at Damascus in 1193 and was buried in a simple wooden sarcophagus inside a small mausoleum north of the Umayyad Mosque. The substantial wooden tomb remained unchanged for seven centuries. Kaiser Wilhelm II visited in November 1898, was substantially moved, and paid for the marble tomb that now sits next to the original.
