Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr was shot at 18:01 Central Standard Time on 4 April 1968 while standing on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was pronounced dead at St Joseph's Hospital at 19:05. The shooter was identified as James Earl Ray, who was arrested at Heathrow Airport on 8 June 1968 and pleaded guilty in March 1969.
