Angkor, the Largest City of the Pre-Industrial World, and Why Its Kings Walked Away

At its height around 1200, Greater Angkor covered some 1,000 km² and may have held close to a million people, sustained by a vast engineered water network. By the mid-15th century the court was gone to the south. Not 'lost' — Angkor Wat never ceased to be a shrine — the city was undone, modern research suggests, by its own infrastructure meeting megadroughts and floods.
