The Tobacco Farmer's Daughter Whose Cancer Cells Became the First Immortal Human Cell Line and Were Used Without Her Family's Knowledge for Sixty Years

Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins on 4 October 1951, aged 31. A tissue sample taken before her death became the HeLa cell line — the first human cells to grow indefinitely in laboratory culture. They have produced almost every major biomedical breakthrough of the subsequent 70 years. Her family did not know until 1973.

The American Writer Found Delirious on a Baltimore Sidewalk in Someone Else's Clothes Who Died Four Days Later and Whose Cause of Death Is Still Disputed

Edgar Allan Poe was found semi-conscious outside Ryan's Tavern, a Baltimore polling place, on 3 October 1849. He was wearing cheap secondhand clothes that were not his. He died at Washington College Hospital on 7 October, aged 40, without ever giving a coherent account of the preceding week. The cause of death has been variously diagnosed as alcoholism, rabies, cooping, syphilis, and brain tumour.

The Rochester Optical Scientist Who Read the Erased Pages of the Archimedes Palimpsest

Roger L. Easton Jr. of the Rochester Institute of Technology led the multispectral imaging programme that recovered text from the Archimedes Palimpsest between 1999 and 2008. The technique combines ultraviolet, visible, and infrared photography with substantial computational analysis to detect ink residues invisible to the unaided eye.
