The Truck Fire That Killed Thirty-Nine People in a Twelve-Kilometre Alpine Road Tunnel in March 1999
A Belgian refrigerated truck carrying flour and margarine caught fire approximately 6 km into the Mont Blanc road tunnel on the morning of 24 March 1999. The 12 km tunnel had no ventilated emergency-refuge shelters and no continuous fire-suppression system. The fire burned for 53 hours at temperatures reaching 1,000°C. Thirty-nine people died.
