Marguerite Steinheil was 39 years old and the principal mistress of French President Félix Faure when Faure suffered a fatal stroke during a sexual encounter at the Élysée Palace on 16 February 1899. Ten years later she was tried for the murder of her husband and mother and was acquitted.
