The Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852, Which Killed a Million People While Food Left the Ports

When the potato blight destroyed Ireland's staple crop from 1845, around one million people died and well over a million emigrated, while grain and livestock continued to be exported under armed guard. Ireland's population fell by a quarter and has never returned to its pre-famine level — the demographic scar is still on the map.
