The French Captain Who Refused to Abandon His Burning Ammunition Ship at Texas City in 1947
Captain Charles de Guillebon was the master of the French Liberty ship *Grandcamp* when fire broke out in its hold of 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate at Texas City on 16 April 1947. He refused to flood the hold for fear of losing the cargo. The ship blew up at 9:12 AM. Everyone aboard died.
