Eleven days after Britain invaded Zululand, a Zulu army of some 20,000 overran the British camp at Isandlwana, killing over 1,300 British and colonial troops with spear and shield against breech-loading rifles — the worst defeat a modern British army suffered against an African force. A partial solar eclipse darkened the field mid-battle.
