The Soviet Mineralogist Who Spent His Life on Tunguska and Died in a German POW Camp in 1942

Leonid Kulik led the first scientific expedition to the Tunguska blast site in 1927, returned four more times in the following thirteen years, and was preparing a sixth expedition when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. He volunteered for the People's Militia in 1941, was captured at Vyazma in October, and died of typhus in a Spas-Demensk POW camp in April 1942.
