The Coroner’s Report July 25, 2026 · Shark Island, Lüderitz, Namibia

The Herero and Nama Genocide of 1904-1908 in German South-West Africa

After the Herero rose against German colonial rule in 1904, General Lothar von Trotha issued a written extermination order and drove the people into the Omaheke desert; the Nama who rose next were broken in concentration camps like Shark Island. Some 65,000-80,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama died — the first genocide of the twentieth century, formally acknowledged by Germany in 2021.
