From the story
Mary Toft, the Woman Who Convinced the King's Surgeons She Was Giving Birth to Rabbits in 1726

In the autumn of 1726, Mary Toft of Godalming appeared to give birth to a series of dead rabbits. The king's own surgeon-anatomist endorsed the miracle; London's medical elite descended on the case. In December she confessed to the hoax, and the careers of her believers collapsed with her.
