The Eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886, Which Buried Villages and Destroyed the Pink and White Terraces Shortly after midnight on 10 June 1886, Mount Tarawera in New Zealand split open along a 17-kilometre rift. The eruption killed around 120 people, buried the village of Te Wairoa, and obliterated the Pink and White Terraces — silica formations then celebrated as the eighth wonder of the world. Eleven days earlier, tourists reported meeting a phantom war canoe on the lake.
