During the Carrington Event of September 1859, what did some telegraph operators discover they could do?

From the story
The Carrington Event of September 1859, the Solar Storm That Set Telegraph Offices Sparking

On 1 September 1859 astronomer Richard Carrington watched a white flash erupt on the Sun. Within a day the largest geomagnetic storm on record hit Earth — auroras were seen near the equator, telegraph lines sparked and shocked their operators, and some circuits ran on auroral current alone. A repeat today would be a global infrastructure disaster.
