The Mary Celeste, Found Sailing the Atlantic in Good Order on 4 December 1872 With Nobody Aboard On 4 December 1872 the brigantine Mary Celeste was found under sail between the Azores and Portugal — seaworthy, provisioned for months, cargo intact, and completely empty. Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, his two-year-old daughter, and the crew of seven were never seen again.
