During the night retreat from Tenochtitlan on 30 June 1520, what drowned many of Cortés's soldiers in the lake?

From the story
La Noche Triste, the Night of 30 June 1520 When the Aztecs Drove Cortés from Tenochtitlan

On the rainy night of 30 June 1520, Hernán Cortés's army tried to slip out of Tenochtitlan across the Tlacopan causeway and was caught. Hundreds of Spaniards and thousands of native allies died in the lake, many dragged down by the gold sewn into their clothes. Spain remembered it as the Sad Night; Mexico City has renamed it the Victorious one.
