The Zulu Kingdom was forged by Shaka from a minor chiefdom into southern Africa's dominant power in the decade after 1816, through military reforms whose shock reshaped the whole region. It destroyed a British army at Isandlwana in 1879, was conquered by Britain the same year, and formally annexed in 1887.
