Timur (Tamerlane) Timur (1336-1405), the Turco-Mongol conqueror known in the West as Tamerlane, built a Central Asian empire from Samarkand through campaigns of legendary brutality — sacking Delhi in 1398 and capturing the Ottoman sultan in 1402. He died marching on Ming China. His descendant Babur founded the Mughal Empire; his tomb's opening in June 1941 spawned a famous curse story.
