The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project (1942-1945) was the secret Anglo-American program that built the first nuclear weapons, employing some 130,000 people at hidden sites including Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Hanford. It tested the first bomb at Trinity on 16 July 1945 and produced the weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki three weeks later.
