Which event preceded the First Crusade's arrival in the Holy Land in 1099?
In the spring and summer of 1096, crusader bands under Count Emicho of Flonheim and others massacred the Jewish communities of Speyer, Worms, Mainz, and Cologne en route to the Holy Land. Approximately 5,000 Jews were killed. Many of the responsible armies were destroyed in Hungary by King Coloman's forces before reaching the crusading theatre.
