On what date did World War II formally end in the Pacific?
The formal surrender of Japan was signed in Tokyo Bay aboard the battleship USS Missouri on 2 September 1945, ending the war. V-E Day (8 May) ended the European theatre. Hirohito's broadcast announcing surrender to the Japanese people came 15 August (V-J Day in some Allied countries). Hiroshima was bombed 6 August, Nagasaki 9 August.
