In late January 1959 ten ski-hikers from the Ural Polytechnical Institute — experienced, fit, mostly in their early twenties, led by 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov — set out for a Grade III winter traverse in the northern Urals. One turned back sick. On 1 February the remaining nine pitched their tent high on the treeless slope of Kholat Syakhl — in Mansi, commonly glossed as “Dead Mountain.”
When no telegram came, searchers went out. On 26 February they found the tent: half-collapsed under snow, provisions and warm clothing inside, and the canvas cut open from within. Eight or nine sets of footprints — some from bare or stockinged feet — led downslope toward the forest.
What the searchers found
Two bodies lay by the remains of a small fire under a large cedar 1.5 km away, shoeless and in underclothes; branches were broken high up the trunk, as if climbed. Three more — Dyatlov among them — lay spaced along the line back toward the tent, apparently having died trying to return. All five had died of hypothermia.
The last four were found only in May, under metres of snow in a ravine streambed. These carried the injuries that made the case immortal: massive chest fractures in two, a severe skull fracture in another — force compared by the examining doctor to a car crash — yet almost no external wounds. One woman’s tongue and eyes were missing. Some clothing showed weak radioactive contamination. The Soviet inquest closed with a phrase that launched a thousand theories: death by “a compelling natural force.” The files were archived; the area was closed to hikers for three years.
Sixty years of theories, one physics paper
The vacuum filled with everything: weapons tests, infrasound, Mansi hostility (dismissed even in 1959), escaped prisoners, yeti. The mundane readings were always stronger — the missing soft tissue is ordinary decomposition and scavenging in meltwater; the radioactivity traced plausibly to lantern mantles and to one hiker’s past work at a nuclear facility.
In 2019-20 Russian prosecutors reopened and closed the case: avalanche. The scientific keystone came in 2021, when Johan Gaume and Alexander Puzrin published a model showing how a small, delayed slab avalanche — released hours after the hikers cut their tent platform into the slope, on a night of katabatic wind-loading — could strike a tent bedded on rigid skis and produce exactly those chest and skull injuries without killing outright. Injured and disoriented in darkness and a -25°C wind, cutting out and moving downhill to shelter was not madness but mountaineering logic. The group that stayed together by the cedar and the ravine died of cold like the rest.
The pass now bears Dyatlov’s name. The finding stands as the sane answer; the case’s grip on the imagination suggests the sane answer is not what most visitors come for.
