A transit of Venus — the planet crossing the Sun’s face — was the eighteenth century’s great scientific prize: timed from stations across the globe, it would yield, by Halley’s method, the distance from Earth to Sun, the yardstick of the universe. Transits come in pairs eight years apart, then not for over a century. For the 1761 and 1769 pair, the learned academies of warring Europe mounted a joint scientific campaign without precedent — the reason Captain Cook sailed for Tahiti.

France’s man for India was Guillaume Le Gentil of the Académie des Sciences, who left Paris in March 1760 to observe from Pondicherry. The Seven Years War intervened: by the time his ship neared India, Pondicherry had fallen to the British, and on 6 June 1761 — transit day — he was at sea, instruments useless on a moving deck, watching his data slide across the Sun untimed.

The eight-year wait

Rather than sail home in defeat, Le Gentil made the astronomer’s bet: the second transit was eight years off, and he was already halfway there. He spent the years surveying the Indian Ocean — Madagascar, Mauritius, the Philippines — before returning to a restored French Pondicherry, where the governor helped him build a small observatory on the ruins of a fort. His equipment was excellent; his practice runs, flawless. The entire month before the transit gave cloudless skies.

On the morning of 4 June 1769, a squall stood over Pondicherry precisely during the transit. The sky was clear again within the hour. In Manila — the station he had left as too risky, on a hunch and official discouragement — the day was perfect. Le Gentil recorded that he could not bring himself to write his journal for two weeks, “as if I had been struck senseless.”

The homecoming

The return voyage nearly killed him twice — dysentery, then a hurricane — and delivered the final acts. Reaching Paris in October 1771, eleven and a half years after leaving, he found he had been declared legally dead: his heirs were dividing his estate (aided, he wrote bitterly, by his own lawyer), his wife had remarried, and the Académie had given away his seat. He sued; the affair took royal intervention to untangle.

The ending, rarely told, is happy: he recovered his place, married again — by accounts contentedly — had a daughter he adored, published his great Voyage memoir, and lived another twenty-one years, dying in 1792 with more good fortune banked than the legend allows. The transit data gathered worldwide, meanwhile, fixed the Sun’s distance to within about one per cent — an achievement to which Le Gentil, patron saint of fieldwork’s cruelties, contributed eleven years and one cloud.
