Founding an argument-settling machine

On 28 November 1660, after a lecture by the young astronomer-architect Christopher Wren, a dozen men in London resolved to found “a Colledge for the Promoting of Physico-Mathematicall Experimentall Learning.” Charles II chartered it in 1662, and the Royal Society became the institutional home of a radical idea then fighting for air: that knowledge comes from experiment and observation, witnessed and repeated — not from Aristotle, authority, or eloquence. The motto fixed it permanently: Nullius in verba — take nobody’s word for it.

Early meetings ran on demonstration: Boyle’s air pump suffocating unlucky birds to prove air’s role in life, blood transfused between dogs, Newton’s reflecting telescope passed hand to hand. The membership mixed genuine giants — Boyle, Hooke (the Society’s paid curator of experiments, required to produce demonstrations weekly), Wren, Newton — with virtuosi, courtiers, and cranks, which was rather the point: an open club for the curious, in principle judging claims by evidence rather than rank.

Inventing the paper

The Society’s most consequential invention was administrative. In 1665 its secretary Henry Oldenburg launched the Philosophical Transactions — the first scientific journal, establishing in one stroke the machinery science still runs on: registration of priority by publication date (a peace treaty for discovery disputes), archiving, and evaluation by knowledgeable referees — the seed of peer review. Leeuwenhoek’s Delft microbes, Franklin’s Philadelphia electricity, and three centuries of results since have entered science through its pages, which have never ceased publication.

The Society also acted: it co-sponsored Cook’s 1769 voyage to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti (the global campaign that fixed the Sun’s distance), administered Britain’s scientific patronage for generations — and supplied history’s cautionary tales along the way, from Newton running its Leibniz “inquiry” as a personal weapon, to the fellows’ initial embrace of Piltdown Man.

Three and a half centuries on

Under presidents from Newton (1703-27) through the botanist-imperialist Joseph Banks (a record 42 years) to the present, the Society professionalised with science itself — admitting fellows on scientific merit from 1847, and its first women fellows in 1945 (crystallographer Kathleen Lonsdale and biochemist Marjory Stephenson). It remains the UK’s national academy: some 1,800 fellows, the oldest scientific institution in continuous existence — and the place where the modern meanings of “publish,” “referee,” and “take nobody’s word for it” were bolted together.
