The Chinese Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976 That Killed an Estimated 500,000 to 2 Million and Reshaped Chinese Society Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in May 1966 to purge his Party rivals and reassert ideological authority. The mass-mobilization campaign ran for a decade until Mao's death on 9 September 1976. The death toll from political killing, suicide, and famine across the campaign is estimated at 500,000 to 2 million.
