The Aberfan Disaster of 21 October 1966, When a Coal Tip Buried a School and 116 Children At 09:15 on 21 October 1966, colliery waste tip No. 7 above the Welsh village of Aberfan liquefied and slid downhill, engulfing Pantglas Junior School minutes after morning assembly. 144 people died, 116 of them children. The National Coal Board had been warned about the tip — and later raided the disaster fund to pay for removing the others.
