The Space Race was the Cold War competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for spaceflight supremacy, running roughly from Sputnik in 1957 to the Apollo-Soyuz handshake in 1975. The USSR took nearly every first — satellite, man, woman, spacewalk — until Apollo 11's Moon landing in July 1969 decided the contest the US had redefined.
