The State Opening of Parliament — at which King James I, his queen, his sons, the Lords spiritual and temporal, and the Commons would all have been present — was scheduled for 11 a.m. on 5 November. Fawkes was the demolition specialist of a Catholic plot to overthrow the Protestant English government and replace it with a Catholic regent.
